Mama is, in essence, a throwback and a modest delight for those who want a good fright without being scared or grossed out. The director – Andy Muschietti shows a reassuringly confident hand for a first-time for this position, pulling off some fine visual coups through smart camera placement and cutting, and not taking the whole thing so seriously that it becomes overwrought, with fine special effects and a good sense of creating a mood and pacing the jolts.
The prologue portrays a heartbroken father taking his little girls up icy mountain roads to an empty modest vacation cottage in the woods, evidently depressed after a financial loss. Just as he is about to kill the older girl, he is stopped by some type of beast, which the youngster sees but not clearly; in an ingenious subjective visual coup, she only sees its hazy shape since she has taken off her spectacles.
Victoria (Megan Carpenter) and Lilly (Isabelle Nelisse) are discovered five years later; remarkably, they have lived on their own, despite the fact that they appear to be feral monsters, bouncing around on all fours and the tiny one, in particular, hardly resembling a human. The dead father’s attractive artist brother Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his punky grrrl band girlfriend Annabel (Jessica Chastain, wearing tats and a hairstyle that’s something between Joan Jett and Liza Minnelli) take them in despite their dubious qualifications to care for such demanding patients.
The couple is at an age when they could be well advised to seek life interests that include a modicum of money, as they live in a loft in plainly precarious financial circumstances. Instead, a distinguished doctor, Gerald Dreyfuss (Daniel Kash), arranges for them to be housed in an opulent suburban mansion in exchange for the exclusive right to research the girls and, supposedly, assist them to fill in the developmental gaps left by their human deprivation.
Muschietti, director of Mama movie, has focused on the personal arc of Annabel, a self-absorbed scenester who gradually discovers something resembling a maternal instinct as the girls’ emotional traumas are thrust upon her, along with co-writers Neil Cross and Barbara Muschietti, in expanding the story from a 2008 short film. Lilly is more animal, or perhaps a bug, than human, scurrying around like a spider in her own tiny cosmos. Victoria, a clever youngster who had learned to talk well before her father’s freakout, isn’t such a problem.
And it’s evident that they’re not alone. Strange apparitions appear, including giant moths and web-like patterns on the walls, as well as the image of young Lilly tugging playfully with a mostly unknown figure through a door frame in a wonderfully architectural fixed view from a corridor. This property may appear to be spotless and clean, but it’s also haunted.
